Common wire sizes and their uses

Saudi heat and cable derating
Standard current-rating tables usually assume 30°C ambient, and summer temperatures across most of the Kingdom are well above that. At about 50°C, IEC 60364-5-52 gives a correction factor of roughly 0.71 for PVC and 0.82 for XLPE insulation, so the cable carries less current than the table value.
Grouping cables on one tray or in one conduit reduces capacity further, which is why we always follow the designer’s calculation before confirming a size.
PVC or XLPE, armoured or unarmoured
- PVC: the usual insulation for 450/750 V wires in conduit.
- XLPE: higher operating temperature (90°C), used for 0.6/1 kV power cables.
- Armoured (SWA/STA): for direct burial or where mechanical damage is likely.
- Fire-resistant and LSZH: for alarm and emergency circuits and crowded spaces, as specified.
