Technical guide
Breaker types by current rating
The breaker type follows from the rated current and its place in the system: miniature breakers for final circuits, moulded-case breakers for feeders and sub-main boards, and air circuit breakers for main switchboard incomers.
| Type | Common range | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| MCB | 6 – 63 A | Lighting, socket and AC circuits |
| RCCB / RCBO | 25 – 100 A · 30 / 100 / 300 mA | Protection of people against earth leakage |
| MCCB | 16 – 1600 A | Sub-main feeders and board incomers |
| ACB | 630–800 A and above | Main incomers of MDBs |
MCCBs: when you need one
A moulded-case circuit breaker (MCCB) is used when the current is above the MCB range or when you need higher breaking capacity and adjustable trip settings. It is usually the incomer of an SMDB and the outgoing breaker in an MDB.
- Frame size and rated current (In).
- Number of poles: 3 or 4.
- Trip unit: thermal-magnetic or electronic.
- Breaking capacity (Icu) in kA to suit the fault level.
Residual-current devices: RCCB and RCBO
A residual-current circuit breaker (RCCB) disconnects a circuit when it detects current leaking to earth; 30 mA sensitivity is the usual choice for personal protection in bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor sockets. An RCBO combines earth-leakage protection with overload and short-circuit protection in one device.
| Sensitivity | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 30 mA | Personal protection: bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor sockets |
| 100 mA | Protection of circuit groups |
| 300 mA | Fire protection at board level |
Breaking capacity (kA) explained
Breaking capacity is the highest short-circuit current a breaker can interrupt safely, given in kiloamps (kA). It must be at least the prospective fault current where the breaker is installed. MCBs are commonly 6 kA or 10 kA; MCCBs start around 16 kA and go higher by model.
On MCBs you see Icn (IEC 60898-1); on MCCBs you see Icu and Ics (IEC 60947-2). Ics is the level after which the breaker remains fit for normal service.
Trip curves B, C and D
| Curve | Magnetic trip | Use |
|---|---|---|
| B | 3 – 5 × In | Resistive loads: lighting and heaters |
| C | 5 – 10 × In | General use: sockets, AC units, small motors |
| D | 10 – 20 × In | High inrush: transformers, pumps, large motors |
