How to prepare an electrical BOQ that gets priced faster
Short answer
A BOQ that gets priced fast gives each line: item number, full technical description, required brand with approved alternatives, unit, quantity and drawing reference. Full description means, for a cable, size, cores, insulation and voltage grade; for a breaker, poles, rating, curve and breaking capacity in kA. Send it as Excel or PDF on WhatsApp and we reply with prices and availability the same working day.
Why some requests are priced in an hour and others take a week
What delays a quotation is rarely the supplier; it is the questions that bounce back: “how many cores?”, “what kA rating?”, “indoor or outdoor panel?”. Each question costs a day. And if quotes arrive without those answers, each supplier has probably assumed something different, so comparing them is unfair.
A good BOQ answers those questions up front. This guide gives the columns we need, the key specification for each product family, and mistakes we see often.
The core BOQ columns
| Column | What goes in it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Item no. | Fixed numbering matching drawings and spec | E-03-012 |
| Technical description | Everything that identifies the item unambiguously | Copper cable 4×16 mm², XLPE/PVC, 0.6/1 kV |
| Standard | Required IEC or Saudi standard | IEC 60898-1 |
| Brand and alternatives | Required brand + “or approved equal” | Schneider or approved equal |
| Unit | m, pcs, roll, set | m |
| Quantity | Net quantity; wastage in its own column | 350 |
| Drawing ref / phase | Panel, floor or delivery phase | SMDB-2 |
| Notes | Colour, drum length, certificate, required date | 500 m drums |
The specification each product needs
| Family | Always state |
|---|---|
| Cables and wires | Size (mm²), cores, copper or aluminium, insulation (PVC, XLPE or LSZH), armour, voltage grade, colour, drum length |
| Breakers | Type (MCB, MCCB or ACB), poles, rated current, curve or trip unit, breaking capacity in kA, standard, accessories |
| RCDs | Sensitivity (e.g. 30 mA), type (AC, A, F or B), poles, current |
| Panels | Indoor or outdoor and IP rating, busbar current, rated short-circuit current, number of ways and spare space, single-line diagram |
| Switches and sockets | Series and colour, rating (13 or 16 A…), gangs, IP rating for wet and outdoor areas |
| Lighting | Wattage, lumens, colour temperature in K, beam angle, IP rating, mounting, driver |
| EMT conduits | Diameter, length, couplings, clips and boxes |
| Earthing | Rod diameter and length, material, clamps, inspection pits, earth conductor |
For miniature breakers state the breaking capacity because it varies between models; IEC 60898-1 covers breakers up to 125 A and up to 25 kA, and the right choice follows the prospective fault current at the board calculated by the designer. For cable sizes see our ampacity and cable-sizing guides.
Brand and approved alternatives
If the consultant’s specification names brands, copy them as written and add “or approved equal”. If you are open to alternatives, say so clearly and attach the specification page; we propose the alternative with its catalogue and certificates so the contractor can submit it for approval. Do not mix two brands in one panel without approval, especially breakers and busbars, because compatibility and tests usually cover one manufacturer’s system.
Common mistakes that delay pricing
- “16 cable” with no cores, insulation or voltage grade.
- “63 A breaker” with no poles, breaking capacity or type (MCB or MCCB).
- Cable quantities in pieces instead of metres, or without the drum lengths needed.
- Items repeated across sheets without references, so quantities get counted twice.
- A skewed phone photo of the BOQ; a clean Excel or PDF file is far better.
- No city or required delivery date, both of which affect availability and schedule.
Examples: an incomplete line and a priceable one
| As we often receive it | Ready to price |
|---|---|
| Cable 16 — 200 | Copper cable 4×16 mm², XLPE/PVC, unarmoured, 0.6/1 kV, IEC 60502-1 — 200 m, one drum |
| Wire 2.5 — 30 coils | Single-core copper wire 2.5 mm², PVC, 450/750 V, colours: 10 red, 10 black, 10 green/yellow — 100 m coils |
| Breaker 63 — 4 | MCB 3-pole 63 A, C curve, 10 kA, IEC 60898-1, Schneider or approved equal — 4 pcs |
| Panel 24 way | Three-phase 24-way sub-distribution board, indoor surface-mounted, 63 A main incomer, per single-line diagram SMDB-2 — 1 pc |
| Outdoor floodlight | LED floodlight 100 W, 4000 K, IP65, with bracket — 12 pcs |
Examples show how to write the line; actual sizes and values come from your project drawings and specification.
Attachments that speed up the quote, and quantity details
The BOQ alone is often enough, but these attachments cut the back-and-forth:
- The consultant’s specification page for items with a named brand or special requirements.
- Single-line diagrams for panels, since they fix breakers, breaking capacities and busbars.
- The approved materials list if the project has already approved brands, so we do not propose alternatives you cannot use.
- Delivery phases: if quantities will be called off floor by floor, say so; it affects the availability schedule.
On quantities: put the net quantity from the drawings in one column and the wastage or rounding your engineer sets in another, so it is clear what is priced and what is delivered. For cables, give drum lengths or cut lengths where long runs must not be jointed, because drum length decides whether we supply from stock or order from the factory.
Send your BOQ to Konoz
Ready? Send the BOQ on WhatsApp as Excel or PDF, with the city and required delivery date. Our team reads the specification before pricing, and we reply with prices and availability the same working day. For a few items, add them from the product pages to your quote list and send them in one go.
Safety note: this guide is engineering background, not a substitute for the project electrical engineer’s design or the consultant’s approval. Installation and termination must be done by a licensed electrician; isolate the supply at source and prove it dead with a tester before any work.
From calculation to supply
Done with the numbers? Send us the list
Send the sizes and quantities, or the full BOQ, on WhatsApp at +966 55 573 8438; our team checks the specification and replies. We reply to quote requests the same working day.
Frequently asked questions
What format should the BOQ be in?
Excel is best because items and quantities can be copied directly, or a clean PDF. A photo is fine for small requests if it is sharp and straight.
Do I have to name a brand?
If the project specification names one, include it. If not, give the full technical specification and we propose suitable available brands with the catalogues needed for approval.
How long does Konoz take to price a BOQ?
We reply to quote requests the same working day. Very large BOQs or ones needing alternatives for approval may get an initial reply first, then the rest.
