Air-conditioner cable size: how many mm² do you need?

AC cable size follows the current on the unit’s nameplate and its breaker, not the BTU rating alone. For PVC copper wires in conduit, derated to 45 °C, a single-phase circuit needs 2.5 mm² on a 16 A breaker, 4 mm² on 20 or 25 A, and 6 mm² on 32 A. On long runs check the voltage drop, which may call for the next size up.

How many amps can 2.5 mm² wire carry? Wire and cable ampacity table

A 2.5 mm² PVC copper wire carries 24 A in conduit on a wall (method B1) and 27 A clipped direct (method C) at 30 °C, per SBC 401 and IEC 60364-5-52. At 45 °C the in-conduit rating drops to about 19 A, so it is protected at 16 A. Under the same reference conditions 4 mm² carries 32 A and 6 mm² carries 41 A.

What size breaker for an AC unit, and why does it keep tripping?

An AC breaker must be above the unit’s running current, no larger than the maximum breaker on its nameplate, and no larger than the corrected cable capacity. With 2.5 mm² in conduit at 45 °C the limit is 16 A; with 4 mm² it is 25 A. Repeated tripping usually comes from overload, an undersized breaker, the wrong curve, earth leakage or loose terminals.

Electrical load calculation under the Saudi code SBC 401

Load calculation under SBC 401 starts with a load schedule per circuit (connected load), then a designer-chosen demand factor, because the code allows diversity but sets no fixed table. Convert to current and balance the phases; the highest phase current sets the main breaker, then choose a cable that carries the breaker after temperature correction with acceptable voltage drop. For reference, SEC uses a 0.5 demand factor for villas in network planning.

Size a cable in three checks: current, so that the cable rating after temperature and grouping correction is at least the breaker rating; voltage drop, using ΔV = (V/A/km) × current × length, kept within the 4 % SBC 401 recommends from origin to equipment; and short-circuit withstand until the breaker clears. The final size is the largest of the three results.
